The winner of a Pushcart Prize for fiction, he is one of Door County's best-known authors of of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and journalism. (Blei's writing retreat, The Coop, now sits on the Write On, Door County campus.) His work gives readers insight into a different era of life on the peninsula and space to reflect on what has changed and what remains the same. His writing is alternately nostalgic, angry, and amusing, like Blei himself.
  • Winter Book: The Quiet TIme in Door. From the publisher: "In Winter Book ... Norbert Blei ruminates on the county's snowy season and on the acceptance of small wonders, including decay and obscurity. In profiles he tells the stories of some of the Door's legendary public figures (including Al Johnson), poets, musicians, and artists. In short fiction — including "Skating Backwards," "The Hunter," and "The Ice Fisherman" — his writing reflects the landscape on a deeper level.
